Jour 129 à 132 : Quito - EQUATEUR

Le départ pour l’Equateur a été très rapide. Nous avons réservé notre logement pour les premières nuits à Quito devant les portes de l’avion. Le vol se passe très bien. les compagnies low coast d’Amérique sont meilleures que celles de France, en l’occurence nous prenons notre vol sur Jet Blue.

Nous arrivons à Quito, il est 22h30, l’aéroport se trouve à 40km du centre ville. Vu notre départ précipité, nous avons également oublié qu’il se situait à 2400 mètres d’altitude, il y fait donc assez frais à 22h30. Nous sommes en short mais heureusement en veste à manches longues. A 22h30, nous n’avons pas tellement envie de remettre les vélos sur roues et prendre la route. Déjà parce que nous sommes crevés mais aussi car la route n’est pas plate comme aux Etats-Unis.

Nous allons donc chercher un moyen de quitter l’aéroport avec nos chargements. Nous allons y passer 2 bonnes heures et oui c’est ça la préparation. A l’aéroport, pas de pick-up et pas de taxi assez gros. Il faut donc faire appel à des sociétés privés. Ca a donc un coût. Après 2 bonnes heures de recherches nous n’arriverons pas à descendre à moins de 40 dollars. Et oui, en Equateur ils utilisent le dollar équatorien (c’est le même qu’aux USA). La banque centrale de l’Equateur frappe seulement les pièces et non les billets. Facile donc, pour ce premier pays en Amérique du Sud. Pas la peine de faire de change.

Nous arrivons vers 2 heures du matin dans notre petit air bnb. L’appartement est assez cosy et situé en plein centre. Nous n’allons pas trop sortir et surtout nous reposer. Nous appréhendons un peu le rapport à l’altitude, même si tous les américains nous ont dit que ce n’était pas si grave, nous ne sommes pas sereins. Nous avons pris 3 jours à Quito pour nous acclimater et surtout prendre un peu nos marques.

L’espagnol, que nous avons tous les deux commencer à apprendre en université, va nous mettre un sacré coup. C’est dur d’arriver dans un pays et ne plus pouvoir aisément communiquer. Nous visiterons un peu la ville, ferons réviser nos vélos chez un warmshower, qui tient une petite boutique de vélos, fulgur bicicletas.

L’ambiance équatorienne nous séduira assez vite, en visitant le quartier mariscal sucre, la Plaza Grande et ses alentours. Nous ne pourrons pas vous dire si du haut du teleferico il y a une belle vue, mais en tout cas pour le peu visiter à Quito, nous avons aimé ce que nous y avons découvert. C’est une sacré ambiance, les gens sont dehors et vous vendent tout et n’importe quoi, surtout n’importe quoi. Nous allons même avoir du mal à trouver de bons gants chauds pour monter dans nos premiers cols à plus de 3500 mètres d’altitude. Nous en achèterons dans un magasin de sport assez cher, Marathon, des gants en polaire à plus de 20 dollars (les équatoriens ont vraiment de petites mains, sans généralisé bien sûr, mais les gants n’ont pas tenu et se sont décousus au niveau de l’annulaire, dont une des paires en seulement 3 jours…).

Nous nous trouverons bien fatigués, certainement à cause de l’altitude. Cette pause à Quito nous servira à rédiger l’article sur la Turquie, nous faire une beauté et nous préparer à être en complète autonomie, ce que nous n’avons jamais fait jusque là. Nous devons prendre suffisamment d’eau et commencer à aimer l’avoine.

Quito, sera également le premier lieu de découverte des soupes équatoriennes avec ses pattes de poulets, son moté (maïs) et la banane plantain. Tout ceci pourra être savouré dans une formule qui s’appelle « l’almuerzo » qui veut simplement dire « déjeuner » en espagnol (nouveau vocabulaire).

Reprendre le vélo nous rendra un peu anxieux à cause l’altitude. Egalement du fait que nous ne parlons pas bien l’espagnol (même pas du tout). Romain sera un peu plus inquiet par rapport à l’altitude, pour ma part ce sera plus la barrière de la langue qui me freinera.

Jour 133 : Porvenir

Quelle journée! Elle restera gravée dans ma mémoire à tout jamais. C’était tellement horrible. Après une belle sortie de Quito, qui nous angoissait particulièrement après avoir lu les récits des personnes qui ont également traverser l’Equateur à vélo. La ville est transformée en piste cyclable géante le dimanche.

Mais après seulement quelques kilomètres, nous voici devant les premières difficultés, les voitures et les bus polluants qui te crachent leur belle fumée noire à la figure sur la belle Panaméricaine. Puis sont arrivés les chiens (des hargneux et en plus, souvent en bande) et enfin les pistes de terre, cailloux et pavé entre 15 et 20%.

Je ne vais pas vous dire qu’il n’y avait que du négatif, c’était beau mais qu’est-ce que c’était dur. J’aurai dû me douter que l’Equateur n’allait pas me laisser intacte. Même Romain a dû pousser le vélo tellement c’était impossible à pédaler. Franchement pousser un vélo c’est simplement bête, je me suis sentie comme un mulet…

Notre premier spot de camping nous laisse penser que nous aurons de magnifiques paysages pour la suite, mais que le froid sera également de la partie. Le lendemain me fait un peu peur, surtout après une « bonne » assiette d’avoine… Nous ne nous rendons pas encore compte que tout autour de nous il y a des dizaines de volcans. Que l’Equateur va nous mettre au challenge durant le prochain mois.

Jour 134 : Le Cotopaxi

Après une nuit assez froide et un petit dej d’avoine (un super régal) nous voilà repartis en direction du fameux Cotopaxi. Nous ne l’avons pas encore aperçu mais normalement ce sera pour aujourd’hui. Enfin, après avoir passé les chiens qui nous aboient dessus et nous montrent les crocs. Après les pistes de terres désastreuses à plus de 10% et le vent de face également.

Les premiers kilomètres qu’on aurait dû faire la veille, sont abominables. Le chemin qu’on emprunte est à priori privé, nous avons de la chance que le portail de celui-ci soit ouvert sinon ce serait demi-tour et passage par une autre route… Autant vous dire qu’on aurait abandonné.

Le chemin privé terminé, nous arrivons enfin devant un panneau nous indiquant que nous sommes à l’entrée du parc du Cotopaxi. Ici normalement plus de chien et une route un peu plus plate.

Mais les 10 premiers kilomètres de notre étape nous ont fracassés, nous nous arrêtons en plein milieu d’un virage de terre, à l’abri du vent. Le soleil nous réchauffe et nous fermons quelques temps les paupières. 15 minutes après notre pause, nous apercevons un vélo au loin, un tandem. C’est Vasou et Thimothée qui voyagent pendant 2 semaines en Equateur. Ah, enfin un nouveau couple de voyageur avec qui nous allons pouvoir partager notre voyage (surtout nos souffrances en ce moment). Ils parlent français, Tim est français et Vassou indienne, mais ils vivent à New-York. C’est naturellement, que nous repartons tous les 4 en direction du volcan. S’ils n’était pas arrivés je pense qu’on aurait eu beaucoup de mal à avancer.

Eux comme nous, sont dans le dur. Nous avançons petit à petit jusqu’au moment où enfin nous apercevons le mastodonte, le Cotopaxi. Le Cotopaxi est un des plus haut volcan actif de l’Equateur, il se situe à 5 897 mètres d’altitude. En quechua, langue locale, Cotopaxi signifie « cou de la lune ».

Nous n’allons pas faire les cow-boys et monter en haut, de toute façon nous ne sommes pas équipés pour. Nous allons rester à son pied, le contempler à 3800 mètres d’altitude.

Ce soir nous camperons tous les 4 et nous ferons un feu à partir de bouse de vache.

Jour 135 : Sigchos

La nuit n’a pas été simple, Romain n’a pas pu dormir en partie à cause de l’altitude et des bruits qui nous ont réveillé juste après nous être endormis. Des bruits de bête bizarre, nous hésitons encore entre un ours (apparemment dans ce pays vous pouvez apercevoir des ours à lunette, un ours gentil), un cheval en rut ou une vache possédée…

Encore une étape difficile mais belle. Voilà comment je qualifierai l’Equateur, beau mais dur. La descente se fait en partie sur une route faite de cailloux et de terre dure, dans un brouillard compact, je n’y vois rien à plus d’un mètre.

Nous goûterons au thé de coca, cela nous permettra de descendre un peu moins gelés.

Les chemins que nous empruntons sur la première partie de l’étape sont horribles, c’est du sable, c’est complètement perdu. Nous sommes clairement dépaysés. En tout cas pour ma part je suis transportée dans un autre monde. C’est vraiment un nouveau pays, une nouvelle culture tout est différent. D’ailleurs je me demande bien comment Vasou et Tim arrivent à avancer en tandem sur ces routes, bien que souvent nous soyons tous en train de pousser. Sur un tandem, ça me parait bien compliqué.

Aujourd’hui nous devons faire beaucoup de kilomètres et en fin de parcours nous décidons avant même d’y arriver que nous ferons du stop pour monter le dernier col, afin d’arriver sur la route menant à la lagune Quilotoa.

Pour la pause déjeuner nous nous arrêtons dans une petite cantine équatorienne. Vasou et Tim mangent tout ce qu’on leur sert et boivent également le jus servi en accompagnement du plat. Nous depuis que nous sommes arrivés en Equateur, nous évitons les légumes crus que l’on nous sert et le jus, nous le contemplons avec les yeux… Nous les regardons manger tout ça et surtout boire leur jus tout en salivant. Bon s’ils boivent le jus alors pourquoi pas nous! Nous sautons le pas et délectons ce très beau jus que l’on nous sert et qui est fait avec des fruits frais. Un régal. Nous évitons encore les légumes (on ne sait jamais, un sur deux c’est déjà pas mal).

Après le déjeuner nous avons de la chance, la route est asphaltée et les paysages magnifiques. C’est génial de ne voir que de belles cartes postales autour de soi. Même quand c’est dur, du coup c’est plus simple. Nous avons une grande descente avant le dernier col de la journée. Nous nous arrêtons juste avant la tombée de la nuit et par chance, 2 pick-up passent à ce moment-là. Ils nous prennent sans problème et nous montent au village de Sigchos, nous leur demandons également s’ils ne connaissent pas un hôtel. C’est avec une réelle gentillesse qu’ils nous déposent juste à l’entrée d’un hôtel. Bon ce n’est pas le 5 étoiles c’est sûr mais nous avons un lit et ça c’est toujours mieux que d’être à 3800 sous la pluie dans la tente.

Jour 136 : Le Quilotoa

Aujourd’hui grosse étape, encore (je ne sais même plus pourquoi je l’écris, c’est tous les jours des grosses étapes). Un col de 40km nous attend bien gentiment. Apparement les derniers kilomètres sont terribles.

Bon avant ça il faut se cremer (le soleil est terrible dans ce coin de la terre, nous sommes juste à côté de lui, il faut absolument se protéger), prendre un bon petit dej et enfourcher le vélo.

C’est complètement fou, aujourd’hui nous devons atteindre 3900 mètres d’altitude. Pour moi qui ne va que très rarement au ski et qui n’ai connu que les chaines montagneuses françaises, c’est impressionnant. Chaque matin je me réveille et me demande si je vais y arriver.

Les paysages sont dingues, vraiment c’est incroyable. Je ne me doutais pas du tout que l’Equateur c’était ça.

Pour la pause déjeuner, nous trouvons un bel endroit et surtout du wifi, internet nous manque vite. Sur la route, nous croisons nos premiers lamas.

Ce n’était pas des bêtises, les derniers kilomètres sont rudes. Les 3 derniers en particulier. Romain m’accompagne sur ces 3 derniers kilomètres, je n’en peux plus, le vent est fou et de face. Je n’ai plus de souffle. Il faut que je m’arrête tous les 50 mètres. Pas la peine de vous dire que c’était dur, vraiment très dur, Vasou et Tim sont derrières, ils avancent également tant bien que mal.

Nous y sommes enfin au sommet et franchement je suis encore fière comme pour le Cotopaxi. Je l’ai fait, moi, Annia qui n’avait jamais fait de vélo avant ce périple, qui n’était pas sportive pour un clou… Tout est possible si je suis arrivée jusque là.

Mais, je ne peux pas m’auto congratuler toute seule, je dois également cette performance à Romain qui m’a aidé à grimper. Franchement seule, je ne pense pas que j’aurai pris ce chemin (et oui il y avait d’autres itinéraires possibles…)

Nous arrivons tard au Quilotoa, nous attendrons demain pour voir la lagune. Pour le moment un gros dodo d’impose à nous.

Jour 137 : Latacunga

Pas de surprise encore une journée terrible. Le dénivelé va être important et nous passerons notre premier col à 4000. J’en ai le souffle coupé rien qu’en y pensant.

Nous prenons tout de même le temps de contempler la lagune Quilotoa. Qui est très belle malgré le vent.

Le Quilotoa c’est un volcan, dont le sommet se situe à 3914 mètres d’altitude. Depuis le sommet, nous avons pu observer d’autres volcans, comme le volcan Illiniza qui est composé de 2 sommets. C’est d’une beauté extraordinaire.

Après les yeux, c’est aux jambes de prendre un coup. Je commence à fatiguer de toutes ces montées et ces descentes. Car qui dit grosse montée, derrière tu as forcément de grosses descentes. Les descentes c’est aussi physique, surtout après de bonnes journées de vélo.

La ville de Latacunga n’a pas retenu notre attention, nous y sommes arrivés de nuit, il y avait un bordel monstrueux. Nous avons trouvé un hostal pour la nuit. Vasou et Tim ont un ami qui s’est retrouvé ici, Stéphane, nous allons rejoindre pour le dîner.

Jour 138 à 140 : Banos

L’arrivée à Banos (ville où nous faisons enfin une pause) n’a pas été des plus simple. Déjà je me sens épuisée, je commence donc à être de très bonne humeur et le paysage après la grande descente de Latacunga, devient plus vert, moins ensoleillé. Ce n’est pas un paysage qui me plait particulièrement.

Cette étape marquera la fin de notre voyage avec Vasou et Tim. Eux partent en direction de l’Amazonie Equatorienne et nous, nous décidons de continuer dans la cordillère occidentale.

A Banos, je me rends compte que Romain disait vrai il y a 5 mois, j’ai un petit coup de blues. J’ai une terrible envie de rentrer en France. Ma famille me manque. Ces 5 derniers jours m’ont claqué. Je suis un peu en déprime ici. Je pense pourtant que venir à Banos c’est génial pour y faire toutes les activités proposées, comme la sortie en Amazonie, le canyoning, rafting…

Je pense également que l’espagnol que je ne maitrise pas du tout, ne m’aide pas à aller mieux. C’est dans ces moments là que tu regrettes de ne pas avoir assez fait d’efforts lorsque tu en avais la possibilité. J’aurai du apprendre l’espagnol avec plus d’assiduité.

Bref, je ne vais pas m’attarder sur ce moment, mais c’est un moment que j’ai vécu. C’est ce qu’on appelle le mal du pays.

Ce sera l’occasion tout de même de manger au mercado central (un vrai repère pour les équatoriens) et également de revoir pour une soirée Vasou, Tim et Stéphane (le copain de Latacunga) et savourer de bonnes spécialités vénézuéliennes, les arepas et les empanadas, des galettes de maïs fourrées de bons ingrédients. Une bonne adresse à Banos, l‘arepas to go.

Jour 141: Riobamba

La pluie nous accompagne au départ de cette nouvelle étape. Pas trop envie de partir (pour le dénivelé qui nous attend). Nous décidons de tester l’autostop pour le début d’étape au moins pour les 15 premiers kilomètres qui ne font que monter. En sortant de l’auberge où nous sommes restés, nous nous dirigeons vers la station service et demandons au premier pick up que nous voyons et ça marche de suite. Est-ce qu’on aurait un peu de chance aujourd’hui?

Il nous reste quand même encore 2 cols. Nous arrivons à les passer mais c’est difficile. Nous arrivons tard à Riobamba. Nous trouvons un hôtel près des quartiers de la gare, nous tombons sur un gérant passionné de vélo, qui nous fait donc une petite réduction.

Ce n’était pas une des plus belles étapes que nous ayons faite. Normalement, ceux qui passent par Riobamba, se dirigent vers le volcan Chibomrazo. Le volcan le plus haut de la sierra Equatorienne, à plus de 6200 mètres d’altitude. Mais cette fois, ce ne sera pas pour nous. Déjà la route est difficile en bas des volcans alors on se le réserve pour une future visite de l’Equateur.

Jour 142 : Guamote

Le lit était parfait cette nuit, dur de se lever et repartir, sachant que nous aurons encore une succession de cols qui va nous attendre sur la route. Nous avons décidé de faire des étapes plus petites pour être moins fatigué à la fin.

C’est un nouveau voyage qui va commencer, nous avons envie de rencontrer la population équatoriennes. Nous décidons donc de suivre les conseils des voyageurs et de taper à la porte des bomberos, des pompiers, qui semblent accueillir assez facilement dans ce pays.

Le village où nous nous arrêtons et assez vide. Mais nous allons y passer un moment puisque nous arrivons assez tôt aujourd’hui après une quarantaine de kilomètres. Les bomberos nous accueillent volontiers, nous pouvons poser notre tente dans leur salle de sport et de détente.

Mais le contact sera quasi inexistant. Les pompiers de garde, restent dans leur chambre et jouent aux cartes. Nous n’osons pas trop les déranger.

Jour 143 : Chunchi

Nous continuons notre route à travers de beaux paysages.

Nous roulons beaucoup aujourd’hui, la route est plaisante et nous nous sentons bien. Peut-être que nous le paierons demain, pour le moment nous continuons à rouler. Nous nous retrouvons même au dessus des nuages, Romain adore cette sensation.

Les bomberos de Chunchi nous accueillent volontiers, encore une fois. Nous ferons la connaissance de Diego, un bomberos, qui nous parle de son pays. C’est avec plaisir que nous passons un moment avec lui. Nous apprendrons même ce que signifie « gringos » selon Diego. Et oui car beaucoup de monde sur la route nous lance des « gringos » par ci par là, mais nous ne savons pas trop ce que cela veut dire. Apparemment cette expression serait apparue quand les mexicains passaient illégalement la frontière des Etats-Unis, dès qu’ils apercevaient un soldat américain qui surveillait la frontière, ils disaient « green, go! ». Les soldats américains ayant un uniforme vert. Le mot a donc un sens péjoratif mais il est entrait dans le vocabulaire des Andins, qui appellent les « blancs » comme ça maintenant.

Chez certains équatoriens, nous ressentons bien que cela n’est pas dit méchamment, chez d’autres nous pouvons ressentir une certaine animosité quand ils le disent. Mais pour Diego nous ne sommes pas des « gringos » car pour lui ce sont les américains, qui sont appelés comme ça.

Jour 144 : El Tambo

Hier nous n’avons pas pris de photo de Diego et ce matin ils sont partis en mission. C’est dommage nous ne pourrons pas avoir une photo souvenir. C’était le premier équatorien avec qui nous avons essayer d’avoir une vraie discussion et un avec qui le contact était bien passé. Nous le croiserons sur la route lorsqu’ils reviendront de mission, un au revoir rapide.

La route est vraiment belle jusqu’à ce que nous rejoignons la Panaméricaine, tout était bien. Après les derniers kilomètres ont été un enfer. La circulation est devenue horrible et le vent s’est levé. Tout cela rajouté au dénivelé, nous arrivons crevés. Mais les bomberos sont vraiment gentils ici, ils nous invitent à boire un café et manger des chips de banane plantain. Nous passerons un bon moment avec l’équipe.

Depuis que nous sommes arrivés en Equateur, il nous tardait de gouter à des fruits exotiques. Nous découvrirons sur le marché un nouveau fruit, la granadilla. Un fruit qui deviendra un de nos préféré et il ne coûte pas si cher. Il ressemble à un fruit de la passion, il faut enlever une coque pour savourer les grains mous à l’intérieur. Drôle de sensation au début.

Jour 145 : Azogues

Nous nous arrêtons avant Cuenca pour avoir une sorte de petite étape le lendemain et se sentir en pause pendant 2 journées.

Nous allons dormir chez les bomberos d’Azogues, qui ont hébergé un couple la veille qui voyage depuis plus de 12 ans. Impressionnant, peut être que nous les croiserons sur notre route.

Cette fois-ci nous dormirons dans la salle de cours des pompiers.

Jour 146 à 147 : Cuenca

L’arrivée à Cuenca est difficile comme pratiquement dans toutes les grandes villes.

Nous nous reposerons dans un air bnb tenu par un allemand qui est venu s’installer ici à Cuenca pour y faire des études de tourisme.

Nous reverrons pour une dernière soirée Vasou et Tim. Vasou cuisinera pour l’occasion un super plat indu-équatorien. Nous passerons une excellente soirée. Leurs hôtes nous prépareront un canelazo, une boisson typique d’Equateur. Attention l’abus d’alcool est dangereux pour la santé. Mais ne vous inquiétez pas nous avons été assez sages.

J’ai toujours un peu l’envie de rentrer en France. Les pauses sont l’occasion de faire le plein de famille (par vidéo).

La ville de Cuenca est charmante mais pour tout vous dire je ne suis pas émerveillée, peut-être à cause la fatigue. En tout cas je n’ai pas trop envie de bouger, ce sera donc le repos et petites balades qui rythmeront notre séjour à Cuenca.

Jour 148 : Cumbe

Cette journée est marquée par la rentrée scolaire. Et oui, ici comme en France, les écoles font leur rentrée. Mais la particularité de l’Equateur c’est que tous les élèves ont un uniforme, de la plus petite section de maternelle au lycée. Tous les établissements ont leur propre uniforme, c’est un peu la compét entre les écoles.

Normalement l’étape sera une petite étape. Nous espérons pouvoir faire de l’autostop, arrivés dans la dernière petite ville avant un col de 20km.

Le stop ne fonctionnera pas, nous resterons donc dans la junta parroquial pour la nuit. C’est une sorte de bâtiment qui appartient à la municipalité d’El Cumbe. Aujourd’hui nous recevons beaucoup d’informations mais nous ne comprenons pas tout. Apparemment le chemin que nous allons prendre est un chemin de pèlerinage, il y aurait des refuges tout au long de la route. C’est un pèlerinage en faveur de la Vierge del Cisne. Ici en Equateur beaucoup de villes glorifient une vierge en particulier.

Jour 149 : San Felipe de Ona

Quelle journée! Nous n’avons pas beaucoup roulé aujourd’hui, nous avons essayé. Mais c’était terrible, arrivés à plus de 3500 mètres d’altitude. Le crachin qui se transforme en grosse pluie et qui nous gèle! Quel enfer! Nous avons fait de l’auto-stop après 18km de col. Les personnes qui s’arrêtent gentiment nous prendre, après 45 minutes d’attente, n’ont que de la place à l’arrière du pick-up (dehors). Nous essayons tant bien que mal de nous protéger du vent et de la pluie.

Ils nous arrêtent dans le village de La Paz, nous rentrons très vite dans un restaurant nous réchauffer. Il nous faudra bien 2 heures pour nous sentir un peu mieux. Nous ne voulons pas du tout rester ici, nous avons vraiment envie de descendre plus bas. Nous décidons donc de payer un jeune du village pour qu’il nous amène plus loin.

Pendant que nous prenons notre almuerzo (ils n’ont pas trop le sens du service dans les Andes, j’étais entrain de me changer quand la femme a rapporté la soupe chaude, qui ne l’était plus quand j’étais en état de manger…) je regarde par la fenêtre et je vois tous ces gens qui font le pèlerinage. Il y a beaucoup de jeunes. Sur certains tu peux voir la souffrance sur leur visage, sous leur cape de pluie (en plastique). Ils essaient de se changer à l’abris des restaurants qui arborent tous, sur leur fenêtre, la Reina del Cisne. Ils mettent des sacs en plastique dans leur paire de chaussures pour éviter que la chaussette qu’ils viennent de changer ne soit retremper.

Pour cette nuit ce sera encore les bomberos qui nous hébergeront. C’est une petite caserne mais elle fera bien l’affaire. D’ailleurs ce soir nous aurons même le droit à un petit radiateur électrique pour nos petits pieds. J’ai oublié de vous dire qu’en Equateur, il n’y avait pas de radiateur. Puisqu’il ne fait apparemment jamais très froid (sauf à plus de 3000 mètres, sinon les équatoriens préfèrent s’habiller).

Un autre cycliste viendra nous rejoindre, Pierot, un italien qui est parti d’Ushuaia il y a peu près un an. Il est 100% camping lui, il adore dormir dehors et se faire sa popote tous les jours. Il nous donnera quelques précieux conseils pour la suite du voyage, il nous donne quelques appli pour la partie Nouvelle-Zelande et une qui nous servira certainement partout ailleurs, iOverlanders. C’est une application qui te sert à trouver un bon spot de camping, un bon restau ou quelques indications sur la route où tu es. Vraiment pratique. En plus il nous donne une carte sim péruvienne qui nous servira certainement (on aura peut être un meilleur accès à internet qu’ici). C’est incroyable tout ce que tu peux apprendre des autres. En plus nous sommes tellement curieux que nous posons toujours un million de questions à toutes les personnes que l’on rencontre.

Jour 150 : Saraguro

J’ai l’impression qu’à chaque dernière étape ou quand approche la fin je deviens subitement plus fatiguée que les autres jours. Cette étape a été particulièrement dure pour moi. Je ne sais pas vraiment si je suis faite, si mon corps était prêt, à faire autant de vélo dans les hautes montagnes en si peu de temps.

Romain me pousse littéralement sur les deux derniers kilomètres.

Ce soir nous dormirons pour la dernière fois chez les bomberos, en Equateur. Ils se situent juste à côté d’une arène de combat de coqs. Juste horrible, franchement à ne pas faire si vous voulez dormir un peu.

Nous nous promènerons un peu dans la ville, cette ville est particulière du fait de sa population. Ils sont habillés d’une manière significative, les hommes ont des pantalons courts noirs, avec des ponchos noirs et une tresse. Les femmes sont un peu moins marquées que les femmes des autres tribus. Elles sont aussi habillées de noir. J’aime bien leur tenue. Mais celles des autres tribus, avaient quand même des chapeaux de toutes les couleurs et des jupes assez flashies et plutôt marrantes. Malheureusement nous n’avons pas de photos de ces personnes, nous n’osions pas demander car nous avions l’impression de les prendre pour des « bêtes de foire ». En plus les Equatoriens sont très timides et dès que nous leur parlions ils étaient plutôt brefs dans leurs échanges.

Nous croiserons un bomberos complètement saoul dans la rue et un ami à lui apparemment complètement beurré, lui aussi, puisqu’il dormait dans un caniveau ou était en plein coma éthylique. Le pompier viendra nous taper la discussion pendant au moins 45 minutes avec une forte odeur désagréable, devant notre tente. Mais bon, c’est un autre contact équatorien qui nous aura bien fait rire.

Les coqs la nuit sont calmes mais dès les premières lueurs du jour, ils sont bien réveillés. Il est 4heures du matin, nous n’arrivons pas à dormir, c’est simplement pas cool.

Jour 151 à 154 : Loja et ses alentours

La route est compliquée surtout le début, c’est peut être normal car c’est le dernier jour pour moi. En plus la nuit a été dure avec de ses pauvres coqs.

Mais nous allons rencontrer énormément d’équatoriens à vélo, qui eux font le pèlerinage de Cuenca à Loja pour la Vierge. Ils ne dorment apparemment pas et essayent de faire la route le plus vite possible. Nous rencontrons des jeunes et des moins jeunes. Nous roulons de 8 à 10km/h. Les Equatoriens, eux, n’ont pas l’air d’avoir trop l’habitude de faire du vélo, ils essayent d’aller plus vite que nous sur des pentes en moyenne à 5%, ils s’arrêtent très vite et poussent le vélo. Nous les rattrapons, nous nous suivons.

Au début nous sommes sur la Panaméricaine, puis nous passons sur la route secondaire, empruntée par les pèlerins. Elle est très belle, mais nous avons un peu de vent de face. Sur la route nous allons rencontrer plusieurs personnes qui aident les pèlerins à finir la route. Ils nous offrent à boire et des gâteaux, puis un autre pickup s’arrête pour nous faire goûter une nouvelle spécialité, les tamales. Je prend le premier, il est entouré d’une belle feuille de bananier. Je prend le tamales, je commence à le mettre dans ma bouche, l’homme me regarde bizarrement. Moi je trouve ça bizarre, la texture, je n’arrive pas à mâcher. Je me demande si je le mange bien. Je lui demande. L’homme me dit qu’il faut que j’enlève la feuille, ah oui c’est vrai c’est meilleur, il aurait pu me le dire avant…

A Loja, nous allons être accueillis par Elena et Renato. Romain est resté en contact avec Benjamin, avec qui il travaillait à Marseille. Benjamin adore l’Amérique du Sud et nous donne beaucoup de conseils depuis que nous sommes arrivés sur ce nouveau continent. Grâce à lui, nous pouvons nous arrêter chez des locaux. Chez sa belle famille.

Elena nous accueille avec un bon repas. Le repas est à l’image de ce que nous avons mangé pendant notre séjour en Equateur. Du poulet, du riz et des légumes. En accompagnement nous avons un bon jus de fruits frais. Les Equatoriens ne boivent pas beaucoup d’eau essentiellement des jus en accompagnement des repas.

Nous allons vivre pour la première fois un tremblement de terre assez impressionnant de magnitude 6.2, ce n’est bien sûr pas énorme mais quand même. Même Elena et Renato sont un peu impressionnés alors qu’ils avaient l’habitude d’en vivre à Santiago de Chili, où ils ont fait leurs études.

Elena nous fera visiter la ville de Loja, nous devons également acheter nos billets pour le Pérou. Nous ne voulons pas perdre trop de temps sur des routes qui nous semblent peu intéressantes. Il faut que l’on en gagne, du temps, pour ne pas rater de futurs beaux spots, l’Amérique du Sud c’est tellement grand. Romain est toujours très frileux à l’idée de prendre du bus, il veut relever le challenge en entier. Mais il comprend bien que temporellement c’est impossible. Il faut donc bien avancer en bus si nous en prenons un, nous décidons donc de partir jusqu’à Trujillo au Pérou.

Nous aurons le plaisir de manger au mercado central pour la pause dej de Renato, avec un Romain tout fier de sa nouvelle acquisition, un maillot de foot d’une équipe locale. Il souhaite avoir un maillot de chaque pays traversés, pas forcément l’équipe nationale mais celle qui est la plus représentative du pays.

Nous allons voir le feu d’artifice dédié à la Reina del Cisne. Alors comment vous dire, en Equateur, il vaut mieux ne pas s’approcher de trop près des feux d’artifice. Il n’y a aucune barrières de sécurité, vous pouvez donc vous approchez au plus près mais c’est à vos risques et périls. Les retombés des feux viennent directement sur nos têtes. C’était un beau spectacle de cache cache avec les retombés.

Nous resterons avec Elena et Renato pour une journée de plus et ils nous feront visiter une partie amazonienne de l’Equateur, en la ville de Zamora. C’est un endroit qu’ils apprécient. Nous y passons un très bon moment, nous boirons quelques bières dans la rivière, le Rio Zamora.

Nos sentiments

L’Equateur, un pays que nous ne connaissions pas du tout avant d’y atterrir. Même les îles Galapagos, je ne savais pas qu’elles appartenaient à ce pays, avant ce voyage.

Nous avons trouvé les Equatoriens timides, en tout cas dans la partie que nous avons traversé, mais ils sont toujours agréable quand on leur demande de l’aide. La nourriture est bonne.

C’est notre première expérience des Andes et quelle approche, belle mais dure. Les routes sont très pentues. Les paysages par rapport à tous ceux que nous avons traversés n’ont plus rien à voir. C’est immense ici, c’est incroyablement haut et beau.

Premier coup de blues, la France nous manque. Je pense que pour ma part c’était surtout dû au fait que je ne parle pas du tout l’espagnol, en arrivant. Les Equatoriens parlent peu l’anglais, les contacts sont compliqués. Le voyage est différent ici. Du Nord au Sud, le pays est différent. Les cultures s’entremêlent, entre les traditions Incas et l’américanisation, c’est un réel choc culturel.

Les chiens nous feront souffrir, ils sont trop agressifs.

Nous regretterons de ne pas avoir fait plus de côte Pacifique du pays, voir les plantations de bananiers, de chocolat, les plages dédiées au surf.
